Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) is a key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China and is one of the oldest universities in China. The predecessor of Xi'an Jiaotong University was Nanyang College, which was founded in 1896 in Shanghai and renamed Jiaotong University in 1921. In 1956, the main part of Jiaotong University was relocated to Xi'an according to the decision of the State Council, and this relocated part of Jiaotong University was later officially renamed Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1959. XJTU, as one of the first batch of the universities supported by China's “Project 211” and “Project 985”, is approved to aim at developing into a world-class university.

The mechanical engineering education of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) originated from the electrical and mechanical engineering in 1913. Through 100 years of reforms and development, the mechanical engineering education of XJTU is an epitome of the Chinese mechanical engineering education. The School of Mechanical Engineering has grown from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Mechanics. In 1956, the Department of Mechanical Engineering (named as Department of Mechanical Manufacture at the time) was relocated westward to Xi’an together with the university. In 1985, the Department of Mechanics was created. In June 1994, the two departments merged into the current School of Mechanical Engineering.

The School of Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest and strongest schools at XJTU. The school has numerous reputable scholars and professors in mechanical engineering, who enjoy wide reputation both in and out of China. The school is an important base for quality talents in mechanical engineering in China. Over the years, the school has graduated many outstanding talents for China in mechanical engineering. The famous scientist Qian Xuesen is one of the most accomplished alumni. Since the relocation to Xi’an in 1956, the school has cultivated many talents as founders of mechanical engineering of China in specific areas, such as Gu Chongxian in technology of mechanical manufacture, Yang Hanhe in electromechanical control engineering, and Le Duiqian in metal cutting tools, fostered lots of academic leaders, such as academician XieYoubo in tribology, academician Qu Liangsheng in fault diagnosis, and academician Lu Bingcheng in additive manufacturing, and cultivated a large number of talents in this industry, such as academician XiongYoulun, Wen Xisen, Zhang Baoguo, etc.

The school offers 2 first-level PhD degree programs in mechanical engineering, and equipment science and technology (including 6 PhD and 7 master directions), covering 7 majors in mechanical manufacturing and automation, mechanical electronic engineering, mechanical design and theory, automobile engineering, precision instruments and machinery, measurement and testing technology and instruments, and design etc. The school also has 2 postdoctoral research stations in mechanical engineering, equipment science and technology. Through concerted efforts, the school has carved a niche in tribology and rotor dynamics, fault diagnosis, high-speed processing and equipment, 3D printing, MEMS sensor, nano-manufacturing, and bio-manufacturing. Currently, the school is building its international disciplinary prestige. In the education evaluation of 2007 and 2012, the mechanical engineering was ranked in the third place and fourth place respectively. In 2017, the mechanical engineering of XJTU was rated as the A discipline and selected to be developed into the world-class discipline. In recent ranking (Shanghai Ranking) of 2018, the mechanical engineering of our school was ranked second among the universities across the country.

The school has over 331 staff and faculty members and a student body of over 1200 undergraduates, over 1800 full-time master’s students and PhD students, and over 400 part-time Master’s students for professional degrees.

Founded in 1913, mechanical engineering is one of the oldest disciplines in XJTU and is the first batch of state-level key disciplines. The discipline has begun enrolling graduates since 1956 and was approved by the State Council in 1981 to be the first batch of first-level discipline doctoral programs in China. Currently, with mechanical engineering as a national key discipline, our school has 19 national and provincial-level scientific research and teaching bases, and is granted the first National “2011 Collaborative Innovation Center” in mechanical engineering and the international joint laboratories in the first batch. It has become a highland for scientific research on mechanical engineering education and training of top talents.
