Lecture Title:Local stress and strain in heterogeneous deformation microstructure of metals
Abstract:
Heterogeneity is ubiquitous in the industrial production of metallic components, due to friction, wear and the heterogeneous distribution of stress and strain. For investigation of the mechanical behavior of heterogeneity in deformed metals, a methodology is required toaccountfor variations of structural parameters and strength on multiple length scales from the nanometer to the macroscopic scale. Two cases are given: a graded nanostructure in shot-peened low carbon steel and a heterogeneous structure of a compressed AA 1050 ring under nearly full sticking conditions. To underpin the findings in the heterogeneous structure, the same techniques were applied in an analysis of the homogeneous structures. The analyses support the idea that the local-region microstructure in a heterogeneous structure evolves in accordance with universal mechanisms and principles established for the deformation microstructure of polycrystalline metals.
